A Monster Guide To Monster Hunter World – Great Jagras

Great Jagras Guide

The pack leader of the Jagras. When hungry, the Great Jagras is known to prey on monsters that are larger than themselves. It balloons to unbelievable proportions after swallowing its prey.

– Chief Ecologist

The great Jagras is the first of many large monsters that you will hunt in Monster Hunter World. It is the perfect monster for first-time hunters to get into the rhythm of the hunt. But through the eyes of a veteran hunter, it is nothing more than a slight warm up as compared to the real monsters.

With the resemblance of an iguana to our world counterpart, the Great Jagras is classified as a predator. I don’t emphasize on the word predator as the Great Jagras isn’t much of a threat, but as a weapon test dummy, it is great. Though it is known as the ‘Thief Wyvern’, that title is best given to a certain dodo-raptor monster. Labeling it as a ‘big lizard’ or the ‘yellow gecko’ is enough.

Ecology

The Great Jagras is a native to the Ancient Forest in the new continent and preys upon the Aptonoth and Kestodon in area 1 and area 4 when it is hungry. Despite having sharp front claws, it brings down its prey by swallowing it whole, causing the Great Jagras to grow twice its normal size. After swallowing its prey, the Great Jagras would return to area 2 to regurgitate it for the Jagras before heading to a nearby cave to sleep or continue to hunt for more food. In the event of having 2 Great Jagras in the same area, the other Great Jagras can be found roaming between area 6-8.

It would sniff out its prey for a good few seconds before bursting out with speed that the Hunter isn’t capable of outrunning even when sprinting. And when it sniffs out a predator encroaching in its territory, the Great Jagras would seek out the predator and engage in a turf war.

Biology

The Great Jagras belong to the species of Fanged Wyvern and it is impervious to water but receive massive damage from fire. It also receives moderate damage against thunder and ice, and still receive additional damage from the dragon element even though the damage value is less. The Great Jagras is vulnerable to all status ailments, making it the easiest monster to hunt.

The head, belly, and forelimbs of the Great Jagras can be broken, and breaking those parts will grant additional reward upon quest completion. Although you may get the Great Jagras claw as a mission reward, there’s a higher chance of you obtaining it when you break its claws instead.

It is fortunate for the Great Jagras to not have a tempered variant because when it does, the hunters would have hunted it to extinction.

Hunting

The Great Jagras is one of the easiest large monster to hunt and doesn’t need extensive preparation before hunting it. The following item is enough when hunting the Great Jagras:

  • Potions
  • Rations
  • Shock Trap (needed for capture)
  • Pitfall Trap (needed for capture)
  • Tranq Bomb (needed for capture)
  • Flashpod (optional)
  • Dungpod (optional)

The listed items are the basic item that you would like to bring along when hunting the Great Jagras and as for weapons, bring along a weapon that is capable of dealing fire damage. This allows you to hunt and kill with maximum efficiency, due to the Great Jagras greatest weakness is fire. Do not bring weapons that deal water damage as the Great Jagras is impervious to it. And as far as status ailment goes, the Great Jagras is susceptible to all of it.

Unlike the many other monsters in Monster Hunter: World where their tails can be either broken or severed, the tail of the Great Jagras can’t be severed or broken. In light of this, you might want to avoid hitting its rear end and focus dealing damage to its head, belly, and forelimbs instead. Stay close to its face and engage the Great Jagras from the side.

Fighting the Great Jagras is simple as its attack can be predicted easily due to its slow attack animation. Its attacks consist mainly of front slash with its forelimb and a frontal bite. And when you position yourself near its tail, it would slap you with its tail. When the Great Jagras eat its prey, its attack will cause greater damage and it’s capable of a side rolling attack and a body slam. Your plan of attack should be to engage the Great Jagras from the side and prevent it from eating its prey.

The Great Jagras can be easily hunted alone. S.O.S request is not required.

Armour Sets

The Great Jagras armour provides a decent amount of protection in your early stages of hunting. It also gives you a good amount of water resistance and this is useful when you are up against the Barroth and the Jyuratados. The downside of this armour is that it has negative resistance to fire, thunder, and ice. I wouldn’t recommend wearing this armour when you are fighting against the following list of monster:

  • Anjanath
  • Bazelgeuse
  • Kirin
  • Legiana
  • Rathian
  • Rathalos
  • Tobi-Kadachi

The Great Jagras armour isn’t the most beautiful or stylish armour in the game, but it does look like you’re wearing clothes made from a yellow leather.

Fortify is the only notable skill among the skills available to the Great Jagras and that is something I would recommend for new and inexperienced hunters. Fortify grants you an increase of 10% in attack and 15% increase in defense when you faint and this skill stacks up twice. This is a great skill to have when you know that you will faint very often. Although the Palico Rally skill may seem useful at first due to its ability to grant your Palico an increase of attack and defense of 5% per level, the amount is somewhat negligible at level 1 and this skill is negated when you’re hunting in a party of 3 or more.

Overall, the Great Jagras armour is a decent starting low-rank armour for new and inexperienced players. And seeing that the Great Jagras is easy to hunt, it’s a good replacement for your starting armour.
